Prime Season

Water Temp: 42–50°F

Spring

March · April · May

Excellent

Spring is the single best time to fish the Little Red River. Water temperatures are ideal, BWO and caddis hatches produce explosive dry fly action, and brown trout are highly aggressive coming out of winter.

Season Highlights

  • BWO hatches mid-morning through afternoon
  • Caddis hatches begin in late April
  • Brown trout most aggressive of the year
  • Sight fishing opportunities in clear spring flows
  • Comfortable wade fishing temperatures

Water Temp: 45–55°F

Summer

June · July · August

Good

Summer fishing requires strategy. The tailwater stays cooler than surrounding air temperatures, but fish become more selective in warm weather. Early mornings and evenings are the productive windows.

Season Highlights

  • Fish early (5–9 AM) for best action
  • Evening caddis hatches from 7–9 PM
  • Streamer fishing for large browns midday
  • Water temps stay fishable all summer
  • Less crowded on weekday mornings

Guide Tip

Full day trips in summer fish the prime morning window AND the evening hatch — maximizing action in both productive periods.

Excellent

Fall rivals spring as the best season on the Little Red River. Brown trout enter their pre-spawn feeding frenzy in October and November, providing the best opportunity for trophy fish of the year. Absolutely stunning scenery.

Season Highlights

  • Brown trout pre-spawn feeding frenzy (Oct–Nov)
  • Best chance at a personal-best brown trout
  • Spectacular fall foliage along the river
  • BWO hatches return in September
  • Comfortable fishing temperatures all day

Water Temp: 40–46°F

Winter

December · January · February

Good

Winter is the Little Red River's best-kept secret. Crowds disappear, the river runs clear and low in many periods, and large brown trout feed aggressively on midges in slow pools. Sight fishing to 5+ lb fish is a real possibility.

Season Highlights

  • Solitude — minimal fishing pressure
  • Crystal clear low generation periods
  • Sight fishing to large brown trout
  • Midday midge hatches are the main event
  • Memorable experience for serious fly anglers

Top Flies

Guide Tip

Dress in layers and wait for midday. Winter midge hatches on the Little Red can produce some of the most memorable fishing of the year.
